My Knitting Nook

For the past two months, my home office has been undergoing a transformation. The drawing/scrapbooking table has been moved out, my computer desk has been relocated to the opposite corner (which actually makes more efficient use of the space), and the resulting extra space has been filled in with my nifty new “knitting nook.” Nothing fancy… just a corner with enough shelving to house my yarn, books and supplies, and rounded out with an old rocking chair that my mother-in-law refinished for Trevor’s nursery before his arrival nearly 11 years ago (which obviously means it’s no longer needed for rocking babies!)

Catting Around

I finally captured some long-overdue photos of my “furry kids.” Catching all three of them in a photographic mood is rare, to say the least!

Mother’s Day

I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed Mother’s Day this year. Not because it was extraordinary in any way, but because it was simply a day well spent. Corey stayed home with the boys while I went for a 5-mile walk on the trails at one of our local parks. Later in the day, we all went to Pizza Hut for dinner. I didn’t have to cook, plus I got to satisfy my long-standing Pizza Hut craving! :) I then spent the evening knitting and catching up on some photo editing. Yep, it was a good day. I hope you had a wonderful Mother’s Day as well!

I received this gorgeous rose bush from Corey and the boys

First Cookout of the Season!

On Sunday afternoon, my in-laws joined us for our first cookout of the season. It was cool and rainy, but that didn’t stop us from firing up the grill! Filet mignon, red peppers, onions, red potatoes and a fresh fruit salad consisting of mango, kiwi, grapes and strawberries…mmm, mmm!

I bet you're thinking this looks pretty tasty. Well guess what? It was!

Spring Color

Hey, I’m back! I have more to say about my absence from blogging later this week. For now, though, I want to post some photos I took this morning of my next-door neighbor’s gorgeous tulips! Also, the dogwood trees that line the streets of our development are in full bloom, and the grass is brilliant green from all the rain we’ve had over the past few weeks. This spring has certainly gotten off to a colorful start!

Knitting

I’ve been a life-long crocheter since my grandmother first taught me at age 9. Just a couple of years ago, however, I decided to start dabbling in knitting. With the help of a handful of “how to knit” books checked out from the library and several quiet weekends, I taught myself how to cast-on, knit, purl and bind-off. As a result, I realized I really liked knitting! Shortly thereafter, I started my photography business, and knitting unfortunately had to take a back seat.

Now fast forward to 2010. With my photography business no longer (with the exception of second shooting weddings with my friend Claudine and the occasional word-of-mouth session) I’ve decided to get back to my knitting. After refreshing myself on the basics over the summer by making an endless number of practice swatches (a.k.a. dishclothes and hot pads!) I’m now teaching myself more advanced techniques. I am beyond excited that I’ve not only mastered cables, but also braided cables! Although they look very intricate and difficult, cables are really quite easy. I wish I would’ve tried them sooner. I’m currently working on a scarf (in the photo above) featuring a braided cable down the center. When this one is complete, I would like to tackle a cabled hat to match.

My sister-in-law has also recently taken up knitting, as well as crocheting, and loving it! We have plans to spend the rest of the winter turning out a variety of hats, scarves, mittens, socks and whatever else might strike our fancy so we can try selling our wares at this year’s craft shows. Wish us luck!

Christmas + A Goal for 2011

I’ve decided that my biggest goal for 2011 is to blog at least once a week. Yes…me! I would like to post at least twice a week, but for now even once a week is far better than the entire handful of times I blogged in 2010. In fact, “far better” would be an understatement of epic proportions! This is one of many personal goals that I’ve set for myself for this coming year, all of which involve creating a timetable of regularly recurring events in my/our daily family life. These goals, in turn, will help me become much better organized aaaaand…(drumroll)…ultimately stop PROCRASTINATING. I know this is a problem for many of us, but it’s been such a huge issue for me this past year. The major inconveniences I’ve created FAR outweigh what would have been barely minor inconveniences by simply doing what needed to be done WHEN it needed to be done. By organizing and scheduling my life in general, I know I will get much better with the procrastination thing.

I would like to leave you with some photos from our Christmas day. I hope you all have a happy and productive new year!

Santa was here!

Ichneumon Wasp

This female giant ichneumon wasp found her way onto our front porch a few weeks ago. Although very foreboding in appearance, the giant ichneumon is completely harmless and quite docile. Only the female sports the long ovipositor at the end of the abdomen, which she uses to lay her eggs inside wood-boring wasp larvae living under tree bark. This particular gal had no objection whatsoever to me picking her up for a photo!

Baby Wyatt

I recently had the pleasure of photographing my brand-new second cousin, baby Wyatt. Although awake for much of his session, he was happy as a clam on all the warm, soft blankets I brought along and didn’t fuss a bit. Of course, being passed around by mom, dad, both grandmas, great grandma “Memaw” and a variety of other family members (all with warm laps) certainly helped contribute to his calm demeanor! (And…after editing all these sleepy baby photos, I think I’m ready for bed now!)

I was finally able to use this vintage scale my step-dad picked up at a flea market last year!

Candy House

Aaron’s class made candy houses in school last week, and he’s been so proud of his handiwork!  He insisted I post the photos up on my blog, so…here you go!
